A Delightful New Comedy About Family Vacations

The Brownings are on vacation. "Are we there yet?" "Mom, she's bothering me!" Mom and Dad are in the front seat, brother and sister are tolerating each other in the back, and Dad is convinced they're not lost. Sound familiar? Flash forward: Don Browning is a newspaper columnist on his own road trip to honor his Dad's memory, when hilarious flashbacks of childhood vacations come rushing back as fast as the midwestern "landmarks" that whiz by outside his car windows. For anyone who's ever spent hours putting up with parents and siblings in the back seat of a car, or been forced to pose for one more picture, LEAVING IOWA will take you back to days when seat belts were optional, "stupid" was a bad word, and Dad never stopped at any of the cool places — a time when a back seat car window was alternately a prison — and the ultimate moving picture show.

LEAVING IOWA
by Tim Clue and Spike Manton
directed by Deborah Gilmour Smyth

Featuring David Cochran Heath, Cynthia Gerber, Kerry Meads, Paul Maley, Kürt Norby and Colleen Kollar Smith.

Read about LEAVING IOWA in the San Diego Union Tribune

"Best Bet! Adept director Deborah Gilmour Smyth and her highly capable cast squeeze out all the play’s comic juice. The best part of the evening is what it invokes in the audience: reminiscence of family fun, conflict and excursions gone by." -San Diego News Network

"Heartfelt and homespun! You can almost sense the farm fields flying by, and you’re likely to grab some laughs! The cast gets into the goofy fun of the enterprise, particularly Paul Maley and Cynthia Gerber, who play everyone from hayseed amputees to motel-trolling trollops. The main acting fourseome gets the family dynamics down well. Both Colleen Kollar Smith and Kürt Norby manage funny transitions between their childhood and adult selves. David Cochran Heath is nicely cast as the warm, funny father, and Kerry Meads finds a comfortable groove as the long-suffering mother." -San Diego Union Tribune

"Mooooommm – Are we there yet? Tell me you've never once in your life intoned those words; I dare you! Under the light and sensitive direction of Deborah Gilmour Smyth, Lamb's Players Theatre brings out all the wistfulness and humor in the play. The lively and evocative production will probably send you racing to the phone to reminisce with one of your own family members – the ones you’re still talking to, that is, in the wake of your childhood travel traumas." -Jazz 88
